US Election: Barack Obama takes Oregon

Barack Obama has taken Oregon and its seven electoral college votes bringing his total to 251, just 19 votes off winning the election outright.

Obama has already tweeted his thanks to everyone who voted for him in what seems to be a claim that he was won the election.

Along with it’s two fellow west coast state, California and Washington, are large portion of Oregon’s population identify themselves as liberal, in fact in a 2010 Gallup poll the state ranked as the 4th most liberal in the union and the 10th least conservative.

This made the state a pretty strong bet for Barack Obama who won the state in 2008, the latest in a long line of Democratic candidates stretching back to 1988 in an unbroken line.

However it is worth noting that although they make up a relatively small segmant of Oregonian society, the above poll did class the state’s conservative population as the most conservative of any in the union, even beating Mormon Utah.

This makes the state arguably the most politically diverse and divided in the country.

Total Votes so Far:
Barack OBAMA (Dem): 251/270
Mitt ROMNEY (Rep): 190/270
