US Elections: Barack Obama takes Iowa

Barack Obama has taken Iowa’s six electoral college votes, bringing his total to 257, just 13 votes away from an outright win.

The Hawkeye State is the western-most of a cluster of swing states forming an arch stretching from Pennsylvania, across the Great Lakes region ending with Iowa.

Iowa was once strongly Republican however since the 1980s the state has been much more of a swing state and by some estimations leans slightly towards the Democrats.

Iowa was expected to be a very close run race with the result being a major indication of the end result of the presidential election.

Total Votes so Far:
