US Election: Barack Obama takes Hawaii

The island state of Hawaii will give its four electoral college votes to the Democratic candidate, Barack Obama.

His ECV total is now at 244, meaning he now only needs 26 more votes to win the presidency.

The union’s newest state and its westernmost is the birthplace of Barack Obama and was a certainty for the Democratic party.

Obama won his birth-state with a whopping 72% of the vote in 2008, 45.3% ahead of McCain and looked set to be as successful this time around.

Hawaiian politics has been dominated by the Democratic Party since it became a state in 1959, having only voted for a Republican candidate twice in that time, once in 1972 and again in 1984.

Total Votes so Far:
Barack OBAMA (Dem): 244/270
Mitt ROMNEY (Rep): 178/270
