US Election: Barack Obama takes California

Barack Obama has become the first candidate to break the 200 mark in this years Presidential Election.

California has been called for the Democratic candidate, bringing his electoral college vote total to 228.

This puts him well ahead of Mitt Romney, he is now leading him by 65, he now needs 42 votes to win a second term.

Previously a safe bet for the Republicans, the state with the largest number of ECVs in the union, far outstripping second-place Texas, has voted Democrat in every election since 1992.

Californians are seen as more liberal than other Americans, particularly those from the inland counties.

Obama won the state by over 24% in 2008 and polls consistently put this state firmly in the Democrat camp.

Total Votes so Far:
Barack OBAMA (Dem):228/270
Mitt ROMNEY (Rep):163/270
